Minati Mondal, born in Kolkata, India, has been experiencing terrible stomach pains, as well as acid reflux for two long months. When recently she went to the local hospital, the doctors discovered something absolutely incredible.
They found out that the 51-year-old Mondal has gallstones in her body – first they discovered 5,000 of them, and then they became even more surprised. Namely, after an hour, they estimated about 12,000 of gallstones that were removed from her body in total.
Imagine how much lighter Mondal must have felt when she stood on her feet again after she removed all of those stones. They were finally eliminated from her body and did not bother her anymore, as well as her fundamental digestive processes.
Dr. Makhan Lala Saha, the doctor who performed the laparoscopic surgery, has said that he was shocked to see the high number of stones that they removed from the patient’s gallbladder. He could never imagine that a gallbladder can possibly contain that many stones.
The doctor has to ask for the help of numerous assistants during the surgery to count all the small stones, wearing double-layered rubber gloves. After four hours, the assistants were able to finish the task and concluded that there were 12,000 stones, sized between 2 and 5 millimeters.
Doctor Saha says that even though he has performed many high-profile surgeries previously, this could possibly be not only a personal, but also a world record. That can be counted as his personal achievement as well.
Only two months before this case he had operated a girl who had 1,110 stones, and even though he was then shocked, he soon found out that in 1983, in Britain doctors have removed 3,110 stones from a German patient’s gallbladder. Doctor Saha says that this may be the newest world record, because it is three times the number of the stones of the known record.
And what do you think, why this poor woman has not gone to the doctor earlier?
